These specialized, Custom Mouth Guards are usually made out of hard acrylic. If you feel that you clench or grind your teeth during the day, a very similiar Day Guard can be purchased as well. Please note: These products are not to be used for sports or other activities.

The best night guards are about 1-2 mm thick and are made of either a hard acrylic or laminate material. Remember, these are custom mouth guards and should always be made on a model of your teeth.  Beware of a night mouth guard that is one size fits all, or that you buy in a drug store. These do not work!

The reason for the hard material is that as you begin to grind in your sleep, you will simply slide around freely on the hard surface.  This will allow your jaw joint, musculature, and teeth to remain in harmony which could stop the grinding all together.

Softer materials can be used, but we do not recommend them. While a soft material does protect the teeth, it does not prevent you from indenting the points of the teeth into the night guard and thus, grinding very forcefully.  When you do this, you won't wear down your teeth, but you can create jaw joint (TMJ), muscle and headache problems that can be more debilitating than the grinding itself.
